A diamond necklace that brought about the fall of the French kingdom
The Rosary Affair that shook the foundations of the French monarchy .
The Rosary Affair was the first viral post in history - a story that spread like wildfire and turned public opinion against Queen Marie Antoinette.
1780s. A luxurious diamond necklace was ordered for Louis XV's mistress, Madame du Bai, but the king died before he could finish it and Queen Marie Antoinette refused to purchase it.
The Countess de la Motte, a cunning woman from a noble family who had fallen from her fortune, took advantage of the opportunity and the desire of the Cardinal de Rohan to get closer to the Queen. She presented herself as an intermediary between him and the Queen, who was interested in purchasing the diamond necklace, and for this purpose she organized a night meeting in the gardens of Versailles, posing as Queen Marie Antoinette.
The cardinal was persuaded to sign as a guarantor for the precious necklace worth one and a half million pounds.
The conspiracy was discovered in 1875, when the jeweler of the necklace, who was convinced that the queen was the one who purchased the valuable necklace, approached her to collect the balance of his wages. The queen, who was not involved at all, denied any connection, but was sued. The trial became a public sensation throughout Europe. The countess was convicted and punished. The cardinal was acquitted but humiliated and the queen, despite her acquittal - the public continued to see her as a detached spendthrift and associated with statements such as "If there is no bread, eat cakes" and suspicions of spying for Austria.
The Rosary Affair was a turning point that prepared the public ground for the French Revolution and the rest is known.
